Alana O Rogers Dance Company Into Ice
At a recent run-through rehearsal of the new dance project, Into Ice, 13 dancers were moving as if upon a floe of ice, sliding gliding, swirling. Moving, jumping, twirling as native creatures, natural forces, and humans, you could feel the cold. In three developed sections to live music by composer Nico Tower, each section depicts a different type of arctic experience.
Choreographer Alana O’Farrell Rogers was inspired by a recent trip to Juneau — and subsequent research — where she was able to canoe up close and personal, realizing the beauty of the region but also its extreme climate and inherent dangers and how sometimes life is just survival. Each section fully uses her talented ensemble, including solos, duos, and group dances.
It was fun observing the rehearsal — I always enjoy watching dance and dancers, getting a peek behind the curtain as to the process, and seeing how all this comes together to create a new work of art.
This promises to be an important debut of a new dance that pulls its inspiration from the beauty that surrounds us.
